What is SERMI?
The UK’s new standard for vehicle security work
SERMI (Security-Related Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information) is a government-backed certification scheme that came into force in the UK on 1st April 2026.
It regulates who can legally access sensitive manufacturer data required for key programming, immobiliser work and other security-critical vehicle repairs.
Previously, locksmiths and garages had to seek approval from each manufacturer individually.
SERMI replaces this with a single rigorous, industry-wide certificate, issued only after background checks, documentation review, and independent audits.
Not every locksmith has it.

Do I need a SERMI approved locksmith for my car?
If your vehicle was manufactured by one of the 22+ brands enrolled in the SERMI scheme.
This includes Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz.
For key programming, immobiliser work or security-related repairs, you should use an approved provider.
SE Car Keys holds full certification.
Is SERMI the same as being RAC accredited?
No.
They are separate accreditations.
RAC accreditation covers trade standards and quality of service.
SERMI specifically grants legal access to manufacturer security data.
SE Car Keys holds both, along with TSI approval.
What vehicles does SERMI cover?
SERMI applies to any manufacturer that has opted into the scheme.
At the UK launch in April 2026, 22 brands had enrolled, with more expected to follow.
SERMI is separate from standard OBD diagnostics. It covers security-specific functions.
How do I know a locksmith is genuinely SERMI approved?
Genuine SERMI certification is issued by RMISC (RMI Standards and Certification) and requires DBS checks, documentation review and independent auditing.
SE Car Keys can provide evidence of certification on request.
Be cautious of auto locksmiths who claim SERMI approval without being able to verify it.
